Helen Hitchings Gallery at Te Papa

The Gallery of Helen Hitchings, which opened in 1949 ran for less than 2 years. It was New Zealand's first dealer gallery and championed Modernism. Te Papa has featured the gallery in it's Being Modern section, with photos taken in 1949 along with art and objects that were exhibited there. In the recent exhibition a photo shows Helen Hitchings with several works by various artists including an ink drawing and textile design by Avis.

See Te Papa Curator Justine Olsen's blog.

Pin Wall

Pin Wall is a public artwork by Sara Hughes and Gregor Kregar, commissioned by Napier City Council and situated on the side of the MTG Hawkes Bay building. The work is influenced by a collection of 19th century pin cushions and the Avis Higgs design archive, held at the museum.

"We have referenced a design for a textile print by Avis Higgs depicting New Zealand flora and fauna and turned it into a mosaic of colour" - Sara Hughes
